Baloch + Socrates | 2016
Not following the general traditional practices of Islam within Pakistan, Qandeel Baloch was brutally murdered during the summer of 2016, by her brother. The idea of creating a life for herself through ideals that her family didn't practice, her life was taken. I observed this behavior as a modern day martyr within an conventional culture. Comparing it to one of the most recognized martyrs of our culture, Socrates.
This piece was created as a part of a workshop led by David Rudnick, where students were to create a piece with two words that related to a subject they felt closely to. The workshop examined language and how context relates when pieces are put together without implied curation. A website that hosted all of the pieces made during the workshop can be seen here.
